Tip 145: AquaLase® Liquefaction Device: Efficiency
The superior fluidics of the Alcon® INFINITI®
Vision System, combined with the AquaLase® handpiece, permit
safe and efficient removal of nuclei of soft to moderate density (no brunescence).
Nuclear segment removal is particularly efficient although sculpting requires
greater time than would be necessary with an ultrasonically vibrating
needle.
Some "power-washing" of the capsule appears
to occur during nucleus removal, resulting in fewer residual lens epithelial
cells. Should the posterior capsule be inadvertently attracted, the smooth
polymer surface of the instrument would be less likely to rupture the
posterior capsule.
The future for this technology appears to be bright.
In particular, the anticipated increase in removal of lens material as
a result of new refractive lens technology will almost certainly lead
to widespread use of the AquaLase® Liquefaction Device.
