Tip 125: Small Incision Benefits
It is generally agreed that incisions of 3.0 mm or less
have minimal astigmatic effect. However, this does not mean that they
do not have other benefits. It is quite likely that the risk of postoperative
leakage is decreased with smaller incisions; this may reduce the risk
of endophthalmitis, as well as certain complications caused by hypotony.
In addition, incisions which are less than 3.0 mm self-seal more rapidly
at the conclusion of the procedure, thereby decreasing operative time.
