how does the natural human crystalline lens
filter blue light?

During the natural aging process, the human crystalline lens gradually becomes yellow.1 Because of the patented yellow chromophore used on the AcrySof® Natural IOL, it approximates the light transmission of a healthy adult human crystalline lens unlike foldable UV-absorbing IOLs that do not closely match the light-transmission spectrum of the human crystalline lens.

"What is really required is an IOL which attenuates both UV and blue light and in order to fulfill the latter requirement the lens would have to have a yellow pigment.2"

- John Marshall, PhD
St. Thomas Hospital, London, UK

*The long-term effects of filtering blue light and the clinical efficacy of that filtering on the retina have not been conclusively established.
